Episode 9 of Project Runway South Africa (@projectrunwaysa) aired on Tuesday night and it’s so crazy to think that the show has been on for just over two months now. With only 5 designers left, we are starting to see contestants like Stephen (@stephenvaneeden) and Kireshen (kireshenc) coming into their own this late in the competition. The contestants who have seemingly been cruising in the middle are rising like a phoenix from the ashes and really showing the country what their contribution will be to the SA design industry. And boy is this top 5 incredibly talented!

This week, the designers had to work in pairs to create interchangeable garments inspired by 4th Street Wine and the vibrant streets of Braamfontein. Kentse (@bespoke_kentse) was paired with Stephen, Sandile (@sandilerunway) with Kireshen, and Siphosihle (@_sihlemasango) with Jaime.

Now we all know that majority of people are not really fond of ‘group work’ (think of those Varsity days…sigh). So we were a little skeptical about the designers partnering up, especially because they each have very different design aesthetics with very outspoken personalities to match. Oooh child, was this not a recipe for disaster? But much to our surprise, everybody left their diva hat at home and worked amicably with each other; giving total ‘khumbaya’ on-screen moments. Too bad for us drama-loving viewers, this week the contestants really had their head in the game.

The guest judge for this week was a lady who needs absolutely no introduction at all. CEO and Founder of Ndalo Media, Khanyi Dhlomo, left the contestant’s jaws on the floor as she graced our screens oozing flawless eleganza extravaganza!

Project Runway SA is Ndalo Media‘s first television production under its sister company, Ndalo Pictures. So of course the lady who made the show possible, proved to be the perfect fit to join the judging panel this week and Twitter was definitely in agreement.

Out of all the teams, Kentse and Stephen’s creative vibes and teamwork was on point! The proof was certainly in the pudding… or in this case, the runway, where they were announced the winners for this challenge.

Stephen has been a firm favorite on the social media streets and the judges have always given him multiple nods. But he has never won a challenge until last night! Noni Gasa loved the boyfriend shirt that Kentse made and Khanyi Dhlomo gushed over Stephen’s zip detail on the crop top and pencil skirt that he created. Needless to say his Twitter stans were elated.

But sadly for one contestant it was the end of the road. Our favourite drama king, Siphosihle, had finally used up all his lives and was eliminated from the competition. Although Host, Lerato Kganyago, was living for the bomber jacket he created, Rahim Rawjee was not feeling the banana pants at all honey. This was the third week in a row that Siphosihle was in the bottom two and you could just see it in his face that he was ready to go home. Last week he was saved by renowned Designer and Mentor of the show, Gert Johan-Coetzee, who used his Mentor Save on Siphosihle. Side note though: was it really a save or was it because an even number of contestants was required for this week’s team challenge? *side eye*. We’ll let you chew on that!

We will definitely miss Siphosihle’s spicey diary moments and the entertainment he brought to show. Shine King, Shine!

We are now down to 5 contestants left in the competition. Only three will make it to the finale with one walking away with the titled of Project Runway SA Season 1 Winner. Any predictions on who’ll be in the top 3? Sound off in the comments section below!

If you missed the episode, you can catch the repeat of Project Runway SA on Saturdays at 15:30 and on Mondays at 22:00 on Mzansi Magic.

That’s all for this week! And remember,

Stay TrendE.
