The 2019 theme for fashion’s most hotly anticipated annual event has been announced – next year’s Met Gala will be Camp: Notes on Fashion. Read more for the details about the theme and Met Gala memorable moments.
So what exactly is the Met Gala?
Formally known as the Costume Institute Gala, this event is an annual fundraiser for New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The Met Gala also marks the launch of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit, which has a specially curated theme unique to each year. Whatever theme is chosen for the fashion exhibit is also the dress theme for the Met Gala’s guests on the evening. And by ‘guests’ we mean pretty much every high profile celebrity, designer and fashion insider you can think of.
This year’s theme was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination which inspired costumes made with decadent jewels, cross designs and even some objects from the Vatican in Rome. Katy Perry wore angel wings and Rihanna arrived as a very glamourous pope (you get the idea).

Camp: Notes of Fashion
Upon announcing the 2019 theme for the Met Gala would be Camp: Notes in Fashion, Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton discussed the idea of theatricality, excess, parody and pastiche, suggesting the public can expect next year’s outfits to reap total extravagance and over-the-topness.
Fittingly, other major elements of the 2019 Met Gala will reflect the style of flamboyance and exaggeration, with Harry Styles and Lady Gaga chosen as co-hosts and Gucci as the sole sponsor for the entire event.
Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele, stated that, for him, the true meaning of ‘camp’ is the unique ability of combining high art and pop culture which, together, sound like a match made in heaven for a formal costume party theme.
One thing’s for sure: no matter how its glamorous guests choose to interpret it, Camp: Notes on Fashion is going to be a feast for the eyes of all who watch. Who’s excited?
