We know it is always difficult to choose where to spend some quality time with your “liefie.” This is what inspired us to create a TOP 5 DATE IDEAS and share it with you. We all know that indecisiveness is not the best – especially when both of you are hungry. This article will be all about great OUTINGS in Cape Town, Paarl, Hout Bay, Kalk Bay and Somerset West area.
1. Happiness in Hout Bay
Hout Bay is so close to Cape Town CBD – so do not think you’re going to drive out your whole petrol tank to do this date. PLUS – the drive is so incredibly scenic, romantic and soothing to the soul.
We know what you’re thinking – “I’m not artsy and neither is my partner.” This is not an issue. If you are looking for a great way to interact, be playful and just enjoy each other’s company – the Clay Cafe is a must. Clay Cafe is the one of the coolest concepts: combining art, fun and food and it makes it one beautiful experience.
How it works:
You can choose how many ready-made pottery pieces you would want (charged individually) and you get paint! They also provide you with a small plate of various techniques and other equipment to make your design truly spectacular. You then leave it there at their studios for them to make it oven, microwave and dishwasher approved. It is also then a way to get you back again as you have to pick up your creations when they are done a few weeks after.
While you are there, you and your partner can enjoy a lovely meal. The menu is quite large and super affordable. Click here to view the entire menu. Most of the options on the menu is under R100!
Address: Clay Cafe, 4080 Main Road. Opposite Bokkemanskloof Estate, Hout Bay, Cape Town.

Hout bay Market
The fun thing about a date in Hout bay is that is can be extended by doing a drive to the Hout bay Market in the morning and go for lunch at Clay Cafe. Or vice versa.
The Hout Bay Market is open:
Friday – 5pm – 9pm
Saturday – 09:30am – 4pm
Sunday – 09:30am – 4pm
Here you can eat all kinds of food – ranging from traditional South African food to a more Global menu. This is also a very good place to be if you are not sure what you are wanting to eat. The market is such a fun, chilled vibe to begin (or conclude) your day in Hout Bay.
2. Playful in Paarl
Spice Route and The Alpaca Loom is about a 45 minute drive from Cape Town CBD. YES – petrol prices are a real B.I.T.C.H but this date is super affordable and you will be busy for more or less the whole day. IMPORTANT: You have to do this date on a sunny day, otherwise it will not be as pleasant.
Your date will begin with a (surprisingly) cheap brekkie at Bertus Basson’s restaurant at Spice Route. Breakfast is between 8:30 and 11:00. A must-try is the brioche toast with caramelized banana, pecan nuts, bacon and a honey/syrup sauce. (A cheat meal in the truest form but so worth it).
After breakfast, head to the grass! There are picnic blankets on the grass where you can relax and take in the surrounding. If you would like to – you can stay for lunch as well. Their pizzas are great. They also have beer tasting and wine tasting (depends who’s driving).
Phone: 021 863 5200
The Alpaca Loom is on the same road than Spice Route – less than 5 minutes away. This is the perfect place to end off your date day in Paarl. The Alpaca Loom is just a fun, interactive activity for you as a couple. Each pay R10 – this gives both of you alpaca feed.
You can then move out and feed the alpacas and you walk between them and feed them. It might not seem like it would be fun – but it really is. These animals are incredible and it is an unusual date to be on. Which makes it unique and memorable. Not only are there alpacas, but also camels! FUN!
Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday: 10:00 – 18:00
3. Idiom Wines
Idiom wines is quite a far way from CBD – but it is really worth it. Just over an hour away from Cape Town, Idiom Wines is the hidden gem of wine farms. Even if you just drive there for the view, it would be worth it. But luckily for you – we also recommend the pizzas (BIG TIME). Our top pick out of the pizzas is the Parma pizza. You cannot go wrong there.
As you sit and look out on the whole of Somerset West – you feel like you are somewhere in Europe. The restaurant looks like a castle in Italy. It is not as affordable as the previous two dates – but it is WORTH IT ONE THOUSAND TIMES OVER.
4. Kalk Bay Day
If you have a lot of energy – you can make this a whole day trip. We recommend doing a brunch and then to roll it over to afternoon. But – just for in case, we’ll recommend a lunch place as well.
This small little local cafe is the HIDDEN GEM of Kalk Bay. It doesn’t really seem like it because it is always packed with locals and people! We do recommend you trying their pastries. This is the best! The almond croissant is to die for – a must-try.
Deli Restaurant – 7:00am – 21:00pm
Bakery Shop – 6:30am – 19:00pm
After you enjoyed your brunch – and you’re still feeling up for some adventures – you and your partner can scroll to the harbour and walk alongside all the big boats. There are usually a few seals and there is a fish market also. It is a very vibey atmosphere!
Harbour House in Kalk Bay
If you still have the energy after brunch and strolling around in the majestic Kalk Bay – we recommend going to Harbour House. Make sure to book beforehand though – and make it clear that you would like to sit at the window or at the front of the restaurant!
We had the mussel pot and sushi – INCREDIBLE. If this is not your style, click here for the full menu! It is quite pricey but you pay for the view as well.
5. A night in the Mother City
If you’re not keen to drive far or just want to see bae for a little while – but still make it magical. We have two different options on how you can kick off your night but the end destination stays the same: Villa 47.
Sunset views at Radisson RED Cape Town Roof Bar
This is the option we would recommend if you know it is going to be a pearler of a sunset. You can start off your night with drinks and a snack at the rooftop bar and then enjoy the beautiful view over the Mother City.
Cause n Effect
If it’s not a nice night, this is where you should go: Cause n Effect is A MUST for the most interesting cocktail experience. Here the bartenders become part of your experience. A cocktail menu for the not-so-plain-jane’s out there – this hipster shindig is an artsy take on the boring cocktail.
Villa 47 is the go-to restaurant for catching up with bae. It ALWAYS delivers great food, good service and a great vibe. Although it is also quite expensive (not a once-a-week catch-up), it is truly worth the splurge every once and a while. Make sure to make a booking – this trendy restaurant is almost always fully booked. Also – try the cocktail that comes in a pineapple mug – DELISH.
