Female rappers do more than just top charts, sell records, fill up stadiums and break the Internet; they also break records and make history – or should we rather say HERstory. Women weren’t really respected in the rap game for a very long time despite legends like Queen Latifah, Lil Kim, Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu bringing female rappers to the forefront. Thank goodness that times are changing and women in hip hop are slowly starting to get the props they deserve.
Nicki Minaj has broken a few music records in her career and currently holds the Billboard record for most Top 10 Hits by a female artist in history. More recently the Barbie Dreams rapper posted a pic labelled ‘Nicki Minaj Now Is The First Female Artist in History to Have 100 Entries in the Billboard Hot 100’. The rapper becomes 1 of 4 artists that have ever had 100 or more entries on the Billboard chart, including Elvis Presley with 108 entries, Lil Wayne with 160 entries and Drake with 191 entries.
Nicki’s latest collaboration with her ex Young Money label mate, Tyga, on the second version of his single ‘Dip’ is the song that pushed Nicki Minaj’s Billboard entries into record breaking status. Nicki was super excited about the news and posted in her Instagram caption “#Dip just became my record breaking 100th entry. Can’t believe it!” The self-proclaimed Queen of Rap is really wearing that crown and is not slowing down.
Another rap goddess that isn’t slowing down is Missy Elliot. Her recent transformation and comeback were unexpected but most definitely celebrated. In 2017, Billboard announced that Missy Elliot was the best selling female rapper in Nielsen Music history. That comes as no surprise considering the countless hits we’ve gotten from Missy over the years like ‘Work It’, ‘Get Ur Freak On’, and ‘4 My People’.
The Work It rapper has received multiple Grammy’s for her music and performance. She has also broken records over the years for having the longest standing number one on the Hip Hop and RnB charts for her collaborations, albums and singles, throwing all the way back to the 90s. Most recently, Missy Elliot broke the record for being the first female rapper to be nominated for the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Missy took to her Twitter to post about this amazing honor where she wrote “I am Humbly Grateful to be nominated with so many other AMAZING writers Congratulations to all of them also “. Only two rappers, Jay Z and Jermaine Dupri, have been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, so a win for Missy Elliot would be a win for the entire Hip Hop industry. We have our fingers crossed for this deserving queen as we wait for six winners to be chosen from the list of nominees which will be announced in 2019.
