First Thursday

First Thursday as we all know (or if you’ve been living under a rock and you’re clueless, haha) is a public event where retail stores, art galleries and restaurants around Cape Town’s central city stay open until 9pm or later on the first Thursday of every month, allowing anyone and everyone to explore the city on foot and discover all that the Mother City has to offer.  This does not include a  tour, schedule or guided walk therefore, you’re literally free  to go where your heart desires.  It’s safe to say 2018 is a wrap, so why not wrap it up with a  bang?  Below we have a list of a few art galleries, eateries and stores to attend on the last First Thursday of 2018.

1. Knex Art Gallery:

Located at the popular East City, Harrington Street Gardens, is the Knex Art Gallery – which was founded by Blake Anthony in 2012. Right next to the famous hub, Biscuit Mill, this  art gallery is a photographic studio/events venue which represents passionate artists and exhibits  African art. The Knex Gallery opens till 10pm on First Thursdays.

2. Ground Art Caffe:

The Ground Art Caffe is where you want to be if you love coffee, good food and art. Located at the De Waterkant, Strand Street – Ground Art Caffe prides itself by treating it’s art, food and  coffee with equal respect and attention to detail. There you will be sipping on some  of the most delicious African Arabica coffee while admiring some of their greatest art pieces.

3. The Association For Visual Arts:

Located on Church Street, The Association For Visual Arts, also known as the AVA, is a non-profit art organisation which aims to promote South African contemporary art and artists. The AVA promotes all things art from paintings, to ceramics, to photography and performances.

4. Mungo & Jemima:

Mungo & Jemima have been showcasing South African design ranges since 2008. This flagship store  is the source of timeless, relaxed, South African style. There you will browse handpicked items from ranges such as GOOD, Coppela, I Love Leroy and so many more. If you aren’t into their garments, you can find some accessory treasures like Famke, Laloo, WAIF and so many more. Mungo & Jemima is for shoppers of all ages and they pride themselves in providing clothing that have their own voices.

5. Timeless Escape:

Timeless Escape is said to be “a hidden, but not so hidden gem”, located on Watson Street (Just off Bree). This is a play to socialise and be entertained throughout the seasons. Timeless Escape ensures it’s guests are entertained by offering them themed escape rooms where they solve puzzles, follow clues, use creative thinking and teamwork to escape the room. With a mixologist at their speakeasy bar, you ought to have a  joll! On First Thurdays you can view the work of local up and coming artists while enjoying complementary drinks. They also have a special of 50% off the escape rooms and 10% off all cocktails on First Thursdays, so save the date!
