Ariana Grande just dropped her latest track “7 Rings” along with the music video and it’s FIRE. It has already broken the record for most plays in 24 hours on Spotify.
“7 Rings” follows Ariana’s hugely successful single “Thank U, Next”. Set to the tune of the classic song “My Favourite Things” from The Sound of Music, Ari raps (yes, raps) about her favourite things – “lashes and diamonds”, “ATM machines”, “big deposits”, “a crib just for the closet” – to name a few.
Whereas “Thank U, Next” was about self-love and growth post-breakup, Ari’s new track is all about her girls and her money. Oh, and everything is drenched in pink – From the outfits and the hair, to the cars and the doghouse (more on the dog later).
There is so much going on in this pink-hued video, it’s easy to miss all the references and hidden messages. Not to worry, we’ve watched it more than 20 times and we sussed out our favourite moments in “7 Rings” so you can get the most out of Ari’s latest hit. You’re welcome.
We’ve heard the intro before
The intro music in “7 rings” is the same as it is in the music video for “Thank U, Next” (remember the background music in the iconic Mean Girls spoof in the beginning?). Ari was dropping clues to an upcoming track in “Thank U, Next” the whole time and we didn’t even notice!
A shopping haul inspired the song
The women in the music video are Ari’s friends in IRL. In fact, the song itself is based on a girl’s day out shopping. See, Ariana was having a “bad” day, so her gal pals coaxed her into some retail therapy at Tiffany’s where they had way “too much champagne”. Ari gifted each of them with a Tiffany & Co. diamond ring (“Bought matching diamonds for six of my b-tches”, she sings in the second verse), decided to document the whole thing in song form, and the rest is history. She explained this all in a Tweet back in December:
well …………. ‘twas a pretty rough day in nyc. my friends took me to tiffany’s. we had too much champagne. i bought us all rings. 💍 it was very insane and funny. & on the way back to the stu njomza was like ‘bitch, this gotta be a song lol’. so we wrote it that afternoon. https://t.co/CoczmPj1Fo

Side note: She also got a ring for her mom and grandmother after making the song.
Mac Miller’s best friend is in the video
Singer-songwriter Njomza is not only a part of Ari’s bejewelled girl squad (and hence a co-star in the “7 Rings” video), but was also a close friend to Ariana’s late ex-boyfriend Mac Miller. Njomza and Miller collaborated frequently, and she even performed at his tribute concert last year. In the first verse of “7 Rings”, Ariana seems to acknowledge the loss: “Been through some bad s–t / I should be a sad b-tch / Who woulda thought it’d turn me to a savage?”
Ariana’s dog is there too
Ariana’s dog Toulouse makes an appearance in the video not because he was gifted a diamond ring but because he just wouldn’t leave Ariana while filming. So adorable! He even has his own luxury pink dog house (with his name on it) in the front yard. Plus, he’s the only male to feature in the “7 Rings” video.
Did you know Toulouse appeared in Ariana’s “No Tears Left To Cry” and “Thank U, Next” music videos too?
Ari gives a shoutout to her ponytail
Ariana’s hair never fully recovered from the constant dyeing it required for her role on Nickelodeon’s Sam & Cat. It’s no secret she used Rapunzel-like hair extensions to help cover up all the damage. She fully embraces her famous ponytail in the song: “You like my hair? / Gee thanks, just bought it…”
Hidden song titles
Ariana is known for teasing future song titles in her music videos. In the “Thank U, Next” video, the title “7 Rings” is on the number plate of the car she’s driving.
And she did it again in “7 Rings”! Arianators believe that “NASA” or “Nomad” will be the next track she drops because both are scrawled in graffiti all over the show.

Fans also think that the car licence plate at the start of the “7 Rings” video is a clue as to when the “Thank U, Next” album will drop. The 25 seems to hint that we could be getting this album as soon as Friday (January 25th).
So many references, so little time (‘til she hits us with another banger!) You’ve got to give it to her though, the song and video is fierce AF. We’ll just be here listening to “7 Rings” on repeat until her next big hit! Watch the video here:
