This just in: The Princess Diaries 3 is in the works!
Sure, it’s been a while since The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement hit the big screen (15 years to be exact). But you know what they say. A queen sequel is never late. Everyone else is simply early.
Here’s everything we know:
There’s already a script
In 2017, author of the book series Meg Cabot gave plenty of moviegoers reason to hope for another movie when she revealed that there was a script for The Princess Diaries 3. Now, both Anne Hathaway (Mia Thermopolis) and Julie Andrews (Queen Clarisse Renaldi) have disclosed that they would both love to do a third movie. Shut up! (and take our money).
Anne Hathaway is super keen
During a recent appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live (WWHL), Anne Hathaway aka Princess Mia confirmed and gave an update about the third film’s development.
A fan called in to ask Hathaway for an update on the rumoured flick, to which she replied: “There is a script. I want to do it, Julie wants to do it, Debra Martin Chase, our producer wants to do it. We all really want it to happen.”
It’s going to be perfect
“It’s just, we don’t want to do it unless it’s perfect, because we love it just as much as you guys love it,” Hathaway continued. “It’s as important to us as it is to you and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready. But we’re working on it.”
Garry Marshall was planning the third installment before he died
In 2016, director Garry Marshall said he and Disney were in talks to make The Princess Diaries 3. “Well, you know, Disney is quite powerful,” he said, “and they say they would like to announce—not me—but we are talking.”
Around the same time, he also told People that both he and Hathaway were on board for another instalment on the series, and that they would start working on it after the actress gave birth to her son Johnathan. Unfortunately, months after, at the age of 81, Marshall died of complications from pneumonia following a stroke.
The Princess Diaries 3 might be a tribute to the late director
Julie Andrews wants the upcoming movie to honour the late director: “I think we might do it in honour of him. Annie had an idea that she wanted to pursue about it, and I’m all for it, so if she’d like to.” Andrews also high key confirmed that she’s in for The Princess Diaries 3: “I would very willingly and happily do it.”
Hold on to your tiaras, the wait might be long
The Princess Diaries 3 (unofficial title) has no release date yet. But we sure can’t wait to see Princess Mia (hopefully still in a relationship with Chris Pine) ruling the Monaco-esque country. All hail Genovia!
