What if I told you that the way we’ve been drying our hair our entire life is wrong? Or that cutting our hair every month won’t make it grow any faster? It is common for us to make mistakes when we don’t even know they are mistakes in the first place and there are thousands of missteps we make every single day because we THINK it is the right way to do it. This is not our fault because we are simply misinformed. And that’s exactly where we have come to the rescue! We about to start you off on five mistakes you are making when it comes to beauty and ultimately save you from making them again. It’s okay, you can thank us later!
1.You should not be drying your hair with a bath towel:
When you’ve been taught all your life to rub your hair dry with a bath towel, when you see people on TV rubbing their hair dry with a bath towel, when you go to the hairdresser and they rub your hair dry with a bath towel, you dry your hair with a bath towel, right? Not at all. Rubbing your hair dry with a bath towel can cause friction between your hair and thus cause knots and breakage to occur and that is not what we want! Instead of rubbing your hair dry with the towel, use it to blot or squeeze excess water out of your hair and if you want to be extra gentle, rather use your hands or a T-shirt.
2. Cutting your hair frequently does not make your hair grow faster.
We’ve all had a time in our lives where we wanted long hair real bad! We massage coconut oil in our roots, we stroke our hair one hundred times when brushing it and we cut our ends as much as possible. Why? Because somewhere, someone once told us that all of these help with hair growth. Well, cutting your hair frequently is not helping at all! According to Cosmopolitan magazine, our hair grows at the same rate , every day, whether your hair has been trimmed or not. However, we are not saying cutting those split ends won’t do you any good. Trimming those edges will help get rid of weak hair, leaving your hair well maintained and definitely stronger. All we are saying is that cutting your hair every month or so will not turn you into Rapunzel.
2. You are washing your face way too much!
It is so easy to make this mistake. We see a pimple or even a sign of a pimple appearing and we want to get rid of it ASAP! So, we wash our face day and night, exfoliate, tone, moisturize, mask, everything we can think of, all in hopes of a clear face the next morning. However, what we don’t realize is that our skin is a very sensitive thing and can get irritated very quickly! Over-washing, exfoliating or toning can cause our skin to develop microscopic tears, dry out and also damage our skin’s natural skin barrier. The best thing to do for your skin is to be gentle. If you one of those people that was your face religiously, maybe give your skin a break. Try taking two days in the week to allow your skin to breathe by only washing it with water and moisturizing.
3. You are forgetting to SPF certain areas:
When we apply sunscreen, we tend to put all our attention on the obvious areas we think the sun will strike, like our nose and shoulders but we forget about the areas where our skin are thinner and more sensitive. One of these areas are under our eyes where our skin is much thinner than the rest of our face, therefore making it more vulnerable to UV damage. Another area we neglect to protect is on, around and behind our ears. If you think about it, our ears are what is most exposed to the sun and thus more prone to damage from the sun. An important reason to protect our ears from the sun is that our ears are at a very high risk of skin cancer. So, next time you decide to go out into the sun, DO NOT forget to apply sunscreen on those area. Other areas you should not forget about are: the top of our hands and feet, our eyelids and our lips.
4. You are wearing nail polish way too often:
With most things in life, too much of this can be bad. When we wearing nail polish all the time, we are not giving our nails time to breathe and this can be bad. Not only are we causing our nails to become dry and brittle but we are also weakening them. This also means that when we always wearing nail polish, we always removing them to apply new colours/tones. This in turn means our nail beds are being exposed to way too much acetone which contributes to weakening our nails and drying them out. A solution would be to put on a base coat that helps protect your nails from those harsh chemicals in nail polish and allowing them to stay strong. Another tip to keep your nails healthy, is to soak your fingers in warm water for 10-15 minutes to help re-hydrate those nails.
5. You not getting enough sleep!
Blah blah blah! We hear this one way too often and surprisingly, majority of us know this is true. The only problem is that we either do not want to admit it or we just do not want to listen to our bodies. Ever wake up and look in the mirror and it seems like all the blood has drained out of your face? This means you need more sleep. Seems like your eyes are way too puffy? This means you need more sleep. Seems like your skin is starting to sag a little in your neck? This means you need more sleep! In order for our skin to begin it’s rejuvenating process, we need to be asleep. This is being as when we asleep, and only when we asleep, our skin starts a process of making new collagen and also repairs itself, which helps our skin look anew. Sleep deprivation can also cause a decrease in blood flow and cause a dull complexion. Chances are when you do not sleep at least 7 to 8 hours a night, when you wake up in the AM, you might resemble someone from Twilight.
Well, we hope this was informing! If you reading this, it is NOT too late. Make sure to make mental notes of these five tips and try never to make these mistakes again, for the sake of your skin, hair, nails and to be totally honest, your soul. Oh and don’t worry, it’s our pleasure!
